Creating a Forever Home by the Coast

When Graham and Sue Cross began searching for their forever home, they knew exactly what they were looking for. They wanted a peaceful coastal setting, surrounded by nature, with easy access to the sea and the ability to walk or cycle into town.

They found the perfect location in Kingsteps, Nairn. The site offered spectacular views across the surrounding landscape and a sense of tranquillity that immediately appealed to them. Although the plot already contained a 1960s bungalow, it soon became clear that extending or remodelling the existing property would involve significant compromises.

Instead, the decision was made to start afresh.

Working alongside architect Francis of MJ Design and timber frame specialists Scotframe, Graham and Sue developed a new home designed specifically around their lifestyle and the unique qualities of the site. The existing bungalow made way for a contemporary home taking full advantage of its remarkable setting.

Designing for Light and Landscape

From the outset, the primary objective was to maximise natural light and capture the almost 360-degree views surrounding the property.

Large expanses of floor-to-ceiling glazing were incorporated throughout the design, creating bright, open living spaces and ensuring the landscape remains a constant presence throughout the home. Every principal room benefits from carefully positioned windows and doors that frame the coastline, countryside, and the ever changing Scottish landscape.

The result is a home that feels connected to its surroundings from every angle, blurring the boundary between inside and out.

"The main focus was to bring as much light into the house as possible and make the most of the spectacular views. The floor-to-ceiling glazing has achieved exactly that."

Why VELFAC

When it came to selecting the glazing package, Scotframe recommended ADW and a combination of VELFAC V200 and VELFAC Ribo Alu systems.

Although Graham and Sue had not previously encountered the VELFAC brand, they were keen to explore the options available and compare different timber-aluminium systems.

"We're so happy we chose VELFAC. We hadn't had any experience with the brand before, but we absolutely love the products. We looked at several other aluminium-clad systems, but VELFAC suited our project best."

Beyond aesthetics, the couple were particularly impressed by the functionality and practicality of the system.

"We really enjoy the ventilation feature on the sliding doors. Being able to lock them in different ventilation positions is great, especially with the dog and on windy days."

The combination of slim profiles, large glazed areas, and practical everyday features made VELFAC the ideal solution for the project.

Working with ADW

As one of the most significant investments within the build, choosing the right windows and doors was a decision Graham and Sue approached carefully.

Several visits to the ADW showroom helped them gain a better understanding of the products and explore the various configuration, colour, and finish options available.

"The showroom visits were extremely helpful. The staff were very knowledgeable and took the time to answer all our questions. It gave us confidence that we were making the right choices for our home."

Selecting the external colour proved to be one of the biggest decisions during the process. With the property situated in a marine environment, it was important to find a finish that would complement both the architecture and the surrounding landscape.

"ADW were fantastic throughout. They sent multiple colour samples to help us decide. We eventually chose blue because we felt it would work beautifully with the coastal setting and compliment the cladding as it weathers over time."

The Result

The completed home delivers everything Graham and Sue had hoped for.

The extensive glazing fills the interior with natural light while framing stunning views in every direction. Large windows and sliding doors create a strong connection to the landscape, allowing the couple to enjoy the beauty of their surroundings throughout the year, regardless of the weather.

"We love it. The house is exactly what we wanted. It's flooded with light, and the large windows mean we can enjoy the surrounding landscape from inside the home every day."

Reflecting on the project as a whole, the couple are equally positive about their experience working with ADW.

"Our experience of dealing with ADW was a very pleasurable one. We would highly recommend them."

The result is a contemporary home that perfectly balances light, comfort, and connection to its surroundings, creating a place where Graham and Sue can enjoy the views and lifestyle they dreamed of for years to come.
